Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Tue, May 11, 2010: 9:30 am to 11:30 am

Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading preventable cause of birth defects, developmental disorders, and mental retardation in children. Yet we are often not aware of the physical and behavioral signs of alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders (ARND). This presentation, part of the Special Topics in Special Needs series at PHP for FIRST 5 partners, will address diagnosis and intervention strategies for professionals and parents who support young children with ARND.

The goal of this talk is to provide FIRST 5 partners with information, resources and strategies to ensure they feel more comfortable and confident in supporting the families of children with ARND challenges. Questions and concerns will be welcomed and will make this session interactive and better focused on the immediate needs of participants.

Parents/caregivers and professionals outside the FIRST 5 network are welcome to attend as well.

Speaker: Shirley Sparks, M.S., CCC-SLP
Adjunct Faculty, Santa Clara University; HOPE Homestart
