Laurel School

The Laurel School serves students with learning differences and students who benefit from a small class size. In a community that nurtures mutual respect and compassion, we cultivate the academic potential of each child through multimodal, differentiated instruction. By teaching learning strategies, self advocacy skills, and social competence, The Laurel School prepares students for the next level of education.

The Laurel School targets students who exhibit average-to-above-average intelligence, but who have a different learning style. Laurel’s small class size enables its staff to work with each student to determine his/her learning modalities and then use targeted methodologies to draw the student into the learning process.

Laurel staff focuses on the entire student: academic knowledge, social skills competency, and, above all, self-confidence. The Laurel team works to instill a love of learning into their students that enables them to stretch and learn more.

The Laurel School’s students are students that typically have difficulties in a large classroom. They may have been diagnosed with the following learning conditions:

  • Dyslexia
  • Dyscalculia
  • Central Auditory Processing Deficits
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NLD)
  • Speech and Language impairments
    • Expressive
    • Receptive
  • Sensory Integration Dysfunction
  • High functioning autism (Asperger’s)
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)

Laurel strives to create an inclusive, compassionate and supportive classroom environment, one in which students can build a love of learning and an understanding of the social skills necessary to continue to learn and grow. Students are encouraged to be compassionate and supportive of each other. To foster this supportive environment, Laurel does not accept students with known behavioral issues.
