Parent Directed / Family Involvement in Services for Adult Children with Developmental Disabilities

Wed, May 21, 2008: 6:45 pm to 9:00 pm

When students that are Regional Center clients who are also in special education reach the age of 22 and transition from school services to adult services, parents and their adult children are presented with a menu of day programs from which they may choose.

Day programs are a service that engage adults with developmental disabilities during the day and provide a host of activities.  Living options, Department of Rehab, SSI, the menu is plentiful and sometimes we just don't know where *we* fit in these systems.

Many parents are passive recipients in the discovery process about adult services because of the overwhelming volume of information provided during a time of transition.

At this meeting we will discuss, as parents, how we can be more involved in the securing, creating, and exploration of services for our sons and daughters so that we can in fact, allow some release of the real life and often unrecognized responsibility for our adult children, through the building of trusting relationships.

We will talk about the myth of letting go and how we can instead release in part through building trusting relationships.

We invite you to join us in what promises to be a lively guided discussion about parent directed services based on an individuals needs not necessarily what's being served on the menu.
