Educational Therapist providing one-on-one services to individuals (generally school-age children) with learning differences such as:
- Dyslexia
- AD/HD
- High-Functioning Autism
- Asperger's
- NLD
Approach includes:
- Building on their strengths to improve learning modalities and self-esteem.
- Understanding their specific learning style and helping them become self-advocates.
- When considered appropriate, referring to other professionals that may improve the learning situation, i.e. other educational therapists, audiologists, and counselors
Primary focus is working with students on:
- Phonological Awareness – learning patterns for spelling and syllabication through simultaneous use of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile modalities
- Reading Fluency – increasing reading accuracy and speed leading toward better comprehension
- Reading Comprehension – understanding the necessary components for visualizing content, building vocabulary, and gaining inferential skills
- Written Expression – grasping the basic skills for sentence, paragraph, and essay construction
- Handwriting – using multi-sensory techniques for constructing letter formations
- Organization and Study Skills – developing effective strategies for efficiently preparing and completing assignments in a timely fashion as well as keeping track of coursework
