Residential Psychiatric Services
When residential psychiatric services are the best option for your adolescent’s well-being, you can feel comfortable knowing they will receive quality care, resources and the guidance they need at Willow Springs Center to successfully return to the community.
Once your adolescent is admitted, a staff psychiatrist will be assigned to work with them from admission to discharge. Within 24 hours of admittance, the psychiatrist will complete a thorough psychiatric assessment and make recommendations regarding diagnosis and medications. The psychiatrist then meets with the primary therapist and the rest of the clinical team regularly to review and refine your adolescent’s unique treatment plan.
Residents live in dormitory-style rooms providing a 24-hour therapeutic environment and full time interdisciplinary clinical and medical staff. A locked setting and consistent staffing allows them to feel secure. On campus, there is a large gym, playground, outdoor amphitheater, spacious courtyard for recreational activities and the “Challenge by Choice” ropes course.
The center provides intensive and comprehensive residential treatment services, including individual therapy and medication management, family therapy, play therapy, group therapy, psycho-education groups, the Ascent Substance Abuse Track, recreational therapy, behavior management, life skills training, and a dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) program.
Willow Springs Center is one of the few residential program in the United States which offers comprehensive DBT for teens. Our program is adapted from the Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. treatment model.
Admissions
Residential Treatment for Adolescents
The reality for many living with a serious mental illness is support can be hard to come by. Willow Springs Center is here to help those who need us most – teens struggling with significant psychiatric, emotional and behavioral problems who need advanced treatment.
To be considered for admission, patients must be in need of 24-hour care in a setting which is less restrictive than an acute hospital. Patients need to have attempted and failed outpatient therapy, or partial hospitalization or an intensive outpatient therapy program.
Pursuant to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Age Discrimination Act of 1975, Willow Springs Center does not discriminate in admissions or provision of services, on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age or disability (including AIDS and related conditions).
Truckee Meadows School
Patients attend Truckee Meadows School, an on-site, fully accredited, state-licensed, private school providing elementary through high school education. Our school is accredited through ADVANC-ED and utilizes the common core curriculum standards. Teachers are employees of Willow Springs Center and serve as educational advisors to the treatment team and students. Our faculty includes special education instructors with Highly Qualified Status in their subject material, many of whom have Master’s level degrees or higher. All teachers meet or exceed State of Nevada certification requirements in the subjects they teach.
Shortly after admission, an education assessment is completed, including an intake interview with the patient, a review of the medical chart and the administration of the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement. When possible, we will contact the patient’s home school. Once the prerequisite testing is evaluated, a school plan and mental health educational program are developed.
Programs are individualized and small group instruction is provided. Class sizes range from 9 to 15 students. Recommendations for special education services are made as needed.
Truckee Meadows School offers unique educational programs:
- Elementary: One-room classroom, offering all academics, kindergarten through third grade
- Pre-adolescence: One-room classroom, offering all academics, fourth through seventh grades plus those students identified as needing a highly structured program
- High School Transition: Movement between classes and a variety of courses for eighth grade and above
- Alternative Education: A variety of courses more self-paced
Truckee Meadows School operates on a nine-week grading period, year-round with several short breaks. Grades and enrollment dates are noted on transcripts sent to the home school at the time of the patient’s discharge. You will also receive a copy of your adolescent’s transcript.
If it appears your child needs special education services at discharge, the principal will discuss with you how to seek services in the receiving school district. With parental consent, assessments and evaluations completed at Willow Springs Center will be forwarded to the appropriate homeschool staff for review. All efforts are made to ensure your adolescent experiences a smooth transition from residential treatment to the homeschool.
