Camp Lee Mar
Camp Lee Mar is a special needs camp that offers a traditional overnight summer camp experience. This allows our campers with special needs to enjoy all the fun and social experiences of a summer camp and gain valuable life skills. Our goal is the development of the whole child. Our campers, ages 7-21, develop skills in the areas of independent living, social and communication skills, self advocacy, and academics. Through a variety of recreational activities and classic camp culture, campers are supported and encouraged to meet their full potential. Not only do we strive to give campers these skills during their weeks at camp, we grow their confidence and knowledge to carry these invaluable skills into their school year. The Camp Lee Mar team works with parents, their child and respective IEP, to create the best programming for a successful summer! Our philosophy has remained a constant through the 70+ years we have been serving the lives of special needs children.
Camp Lee Mar is located in the Pocono Mountains of PA and offers a 6 ½ week overnight camp for children aged 6-21 with a wide range of disabilities. We have been in operation since 1953, offering our children a chance to enjoy the joys of attending a camp, while allowing them to be themselves and developing skills along the way.
Camp Lee Mar offers many typical camp activities, although it has a unique aspect by also offering academic and speech sessions. IEPs are gathered for each camper, with specific goal areas being targeted throughout the summer. We hire undergraduate and graduate students to conduct these sessions, while under the oversight of a special education teacher and an ASHA certified Speech and Language Pathologist.
Through the information received during the application process and collaboration between home, camp and school, campers are carefully placed in a group that meets their support needs and group dynamics. We consider age, independent living skills, and social and communication skills, when creating our camper cabins.
We are continuously told by our parents, the struggles of finding a place where their child is accepted for who they are and their unique needs can be celebrated. Campers at Lee Mar are able to increase and develop independent living skills, social skills, and participation skills to name a few.
