Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities
The Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities (CID) is a private, nonprofit corporation located in San Mateo, California. Incorporated in 1979, CID is a consumer-driven, community-based, services and advocacy organization serving San Mateo County. By federal mandate, the majority of our Staff, Management, and Board of Directors consist of people with disabilities.
CID is one of 29 Independent Living Centers in the State of California and 424 Independent Living Centers in the United States. We are affiliated with other ILCs through our membership and participation in the California Foundation of Independent Living Centers and the National Council of Independent Living. CID is affiliated with other nonprofit agencies through our membership in the California Association of Non-Profits.

Independent Living & Support
Offers group and individual peer support services on a regular basis. The peer support group promotes self-help values and supports healthy interaction and social skills.
Independent Living Planning & Support
The Independent Living Skills program assists people with disabilities to identify resources, strategies, and equipment for achieving maximum independence.
Our AT advocate can recommend technological devices, equipment, and resources which allow individuals with disabilities to increase independence. We can help you identify your independent living needs, provide resource coordination for home modification, and even assist in finding funding in certain situations.
Provides assistance to individuals with disabilities in developing their own plans for the future, including financial planning (assistance with applying for SSI/SSDI, Medi-Cal, CalFresh), employment and housing.
Assist consumers to access tools, strategies, and accommodations that make living in the community possible. Advocates have knowledge of a wide range of community resources to share with consumers.
CID is committed to advocating for individuals who suffer from mental health disabilities and who face inequalities, harsh conditions, and barriers to care.
A registry of carefully selected personal care attendants and caregivers with experience in Home Care, Personal Care, and Respite Care (powered by QuickMatch).
Community Resources & Disaster Preparedness
Community Health Resources for Older Adults & Individuals with Disabilities
CID will provide community education, resources, and individualized support related to COVID recovery (including Long COVID illness) for older adults and individuals with disabilities who reside in San Mateo County.
Disability Disaster Access & Resources
CID aims to assist individuals with disabilities and older adults in disaster readiness and recovery. Resources and services included are community education, starter emergency kits, portabale battery program, medical baseline enrollment, and other resources through the collaboration with San Mateo County Office of Sustainability.
Advocacy & Systems Change
This service is available to individuals, groups, public and private agencies, businesses, and community organizations. CID offers ADA consulting and education in all areas of the act.
Advocacy services provide both individual and systems advocacy to remove barriers that people with disabilities encounter in their efforts to become fully participating members of the community.
Public assistance agencies and state funded agencies providing services primarily to people with disabilities are voter registration agencies under the National Voter Registration Act.
Housing Preservation
CID provides 1-on-1 service coordination, including needs assessment, identification of relevant community resources, and advocacy for individuals with disabilities and older adults looking for affordable and accessible housing in San Mateo County.
Transitioning to the Community
Assist individuals who live in nursing facilities to return to their community as their health status allows for more independent living.
Work Incentives Planning Assistance
Work Incentives Planning Assistance (WIPA)
For individuals currently receiving disability benefits, who are considering work, seeking work, self-employed, or currently employed. We will provide you with information about work incentives which may allow you to keep some or all of your cash benefits as well as your medical benefits.
Youth Services
Take part in the statewide Youth Organizing (YO!) Program, whose purpose is to develop future leaders in the Disability Rights Movement. Through the YO! program, youth can volunteer at CID for one year and receive a small stipend.
High school Juniors and Seniors are invited to spend a week in Sacramento, learning about leadership and advocacy skills!

Marianne can provide advocacy for parents of students with special needs at, before and after IEP meetings. She speaks English, some Spanish and German. She can also refer parents to a variety of resources. In addition, CID can provide things such as grab bars, (will refer to vendor), ramps, assistance with applications and appeals to Social security and much more. Areas served from the San Bruno office are Millbrae, San Bruno, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, South SF, and Daly City.
