Gateway Center of Monterey

Gateway Center of Monterey County, Inc. (Gateway Center) is a private, not-for-profit, community based organization which provides a wide range of services, including residential care, developmental training, and activity programs for adults, ages 18 and over, with intellectual disabilities.

Our mission is to create a caring and stimulating environment where adults with intellectual disabilities can assimilate into our community, in surroundings compatible with their ability to live and work at the highest level possible.

Gateway Center’s core values are guided by the following principles that permeate all our work:

• Respect individual needs and provide an opportunity to socialize, reducing isolation.
• Enable people with special needs to manage their own lives.
• Provide individualized services.
• Understand and respond to the special needs of each individual while instilling a sense of order and balance, thereby supporting self-reliant individuals.

This Program has been in operation since 1975, and is licensed by the State Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division. The Residential Program serves a wide range of clients from those who are moderately functioning to the profoundly disabled, providing 24-hour care and supervision. Residents enjoy an active social calendar and receive the individual support they need in all areas of daily living skills. Community outings for clients are planned and range from larg to small groups with supervision, to the buddy system with no supervision.

Gateway Center’s Residential Programs are not medical facilities, but the health and general well being of our consumers is a primary concern.

– Gateway Center, 850 Congress Avenue

Gateway Center is licensed for 15 clients. This facility is under the Community Care Licensing program and follows the regulations of both Title 22 of the Department of Social Services and Title 17 of the Lanterman Act.

– Forest Hill Group Home, 2824 Forest Hill Blvd. Pacific Grove CA

Forest Hill Group Home is licensed for 6 clients. Forest Hill clients receive support, counseling, and training for independent living skills. This facility is also under the Community Care Licensing program and follows the regulations of both Title 22 of the Department of Social Services and Title 17 of the Lanterman Act.

– Intermediate Care Facility, 854 Congress Ave. Pacific Grove CA

(ICF/DD-H) for the developmentally disabled-habilitative is our newest program. The first one of its kind in Monterey County, this facility houses 15 of our previous clients from 850 Congress Avenue in Pacific Grove, California. Located just next door, it is licensed and certified by the Department of Health Services.

Supported Living Service is a program that provides services of training and support in the individuals own home. Life Skills training and support can include but is not limited to: Money Management, Health and Safety, Personal Hygiene, Social and Personal Skills, Mobility Training and Leisure/Recreation. Supported Living may provide services to a consumer up to 24 hours, 7 days a week. A consumer is eligible for services, regardless of severity of disability. Services may be provided for an indefinite period of time. Home seeking and staff hiring are included in the services.

Independent Living Service is a program based solely on training. Life Skills training can include but is not limited to: Money Management, Health and Safety, Personal Hygiene, Social and Personal Skills, Mobility Training and Leisure/Recreation. Service hours are limited to an average of 30 hours of training per month. An increase of hours is available, based on a consumers needs. A consumer is eligible for services based on his/her ability to actively participate in the training provided. Training hours are provided with the objective of fading out services. Home seeking and staff hiring are included in the services. This service is available for individuals still living in the family home.

Gateway Center provides three innovative day programs designed to develop and enhance skills that the developmentally disabled adult population requires in order to enjoy the same quality of life that non-disabled Californians strive to attain. Clients for all programs are generally referred by San Andreas Regional Center.

– The Adult Development Center (ADC), 850 Congress Ave. Pacific Grove

The Adult Development Center was established to provide training in the areas of self help skills, socialization, sensory awareness, self-advocacy, arts and crafts skills and community integration for adults with intellectual disabilities. Some of the participants are unable to walk or perform other basic ambulatory skills, however they undertake their training with enthusiasm. The Adult Development Center operates at a staffing ratio of 4 consumers to 1 staff member.

– Community Based Program (CBP), 850 Congress Ave. Pacific Grove

The Community Based Program was established in 1996 to provide total community integration with a focus on socialization, product identification and location, self-advocacy, safety skills and community, and educational enhancement opportunities. From delivering lunches for Meals-on-Wheels, to meticulously grooming Monterey’s beautiful waterfront recreation trail, the Community Based participants are proud to “give back” to the community in which they live. The Community Based Program operates at a staffing ratio of 3 consumers to 1 staff member.

– Senior Day Program (Pacific Grove), 850 Congress Ave. Pacific Grove

The Senior Day Program was developed in response to the growing number of seniors with intellectual disabilities residing in Monterey County. Since the advent of this program, it has become apparent that there is a continuing need for programs like this that serve older adults with intellectual disabilities; one that takes into consideration both their changing interests and their physical capabilities. Our Senior Day Program grew from the original one in Pacific Grove to include a second program in Salinas. The emphasis of our Senior Day Program is on providing social and recreational opportunities, maintenances of self help skills, advocacy and age-related health and emotional issues in both community and classroom settings. We expect our services to seniors will continue to grow and evolve. The Senior day program operates at a staffing ratio of 3 consumers to 1 staff member.

– Senior Day Program (Salinas), 408 Salinas St. Salinas

The Salinas Senior Day Program opened their doors in January 2003 in response to the growing number of senior adults with intellectual disabilities residing in Salinas and the Salinas Valley over the age of 50 years. Emphasis is on providing social and recreational opportunities within the community and at the program site. Seniors in this program are also given choices to recreate rather than work or be associated with work related issues. Some of the senior program activities include having lunch and playing bingo at the Salvation Army, visits to the Steinbeck Library, shopping, arts and crafts activities, a daily exercise program games music and movies. The Salinas Senior Day Program operates at a staffing ratio of 3 consumers to 1 staff member.
