Independent Living Services
Provides individually tailored one on one assistance to participants residing in their own townhouses and apartments, to maintain their independent lifestyle. Areas of support include assistance with cooking and nutrition, shopping, finances, relationships with roommates and neighbors, travel training, housekeeping, accessing medical care, telephone and internet communications, social opportunities, and more
Supported Living Services
Supported Living Services, our largest program, is for adults with developmental disabilities who need assistance in their own homes. Each client is matched with a member of our team to provide in home support so that our clients can continue to live independently. Instead of choosing from a regimented list of services, clients work with caregivers to come up with a schedule and routine based on the client’s needs and preferences.
Day Program
With the Day Services program at Greater Opportunities, clients have a safe and caring place to spend the days and, express their creativity through art and music, learn new skills, and meet new people. We offer a variety of activities, classes, and programs through which our clients learn the skills they need for independent living. Our caregivers’ ability to give their undivided attention to each client helps the people we serve thrive and learn to the best of their abilities.
Many members of our Greater Opportunities team who work and volunteer with clients at the Day Program are cooks, artists, athletes, and musicians who are passionate about sharing their skills. Our team shares their skills and talents and encourages each client’s individual gifts to blossom. The Day Program encourages experimentation and openness in a safe setting, so that clients learn self-discipline, self-care, self-advocacy, and develop their mobility and motor skills.
In addition to activities held at the Day Program in San Jose, we also take clients on volunteer trips. Clients love being able to help others, give back to the community, and implement their new skills in real world settings.
At our Day Program, adults living with developmental disabilities come together to learn, connect, and build lasting friendships. The Day Program is a fun way for people to meet new friends while learning new skills in multiple subjects including cooking, arts and crafts, exercise routines, American Sign Language, music, sports and computer literacy. We foster a community of long-lasting friendship, support, and care and provide the skills and know-how for people to live as independently as possible. Even if they’re not able to achieve full independence, participants in our program learn skills that will help them be as independent as possible in their own lives.
Semi-Independent Living
The Semi-Independent Living Services at the Cortez Apartments is a stepping-stone on the path to independent living for adults with developmental disabilities. The program is designed for individuals who have the potential to live on their own but lack the life-skills and training necessary to do so. Our semi-independent living services teach those life-skills in a supportive and safe environment. Clients live in their own apartments, usually with roommates, and attend classes to learn life skills such as housekeeping, budgeting, cooking, shopping, nutrition, and financial management as well personal development classes such as stress management, human sexuality, and emotion management.
Our Greater Opportunities team creates a schedule based on each person’s needs. Our caregivers make sure our clients take their medications, go to doctor’s appointments, pay bills, create a budget, keep track of a work schedule, and plan healthy meals, among many other day-to-day tasks. In addition to keeping track of household chores and schedules, our caregivers become important mentors for their clients.
In order to ensure that people are not isolated in their own homes and enjoy everything our community has to offer, twice a month we take participants on outings around town. Participants choose where they would like to go, and the day involves a fun activity such as bowling or laser tag as well as a lunch or dinner out. It’s a great way for participants to try something new, practice making purchases in the community, and is an important bonding experience.
Our team pays close attention to all aspects of our clients’ wellbeing and development so that our clients can live full and healthy lives. The ultimate goal is for our clients to leave the Semi-Independent Living Services program with the ability to care for themselves and their households independently.
