Loomis Gateway Academy

Loomis Gateway Academy is a registered Private School in the State of California. We utilize research-based, scientifically proven methods to be effective for Dyslexia; Wilson Reading System, Barton Reading System, and Making Math Real. Our curriculum standards have been approved by several local Charter Schools who understand that we provide a unique education for the dyslexic student grades 2-8. We teach all subjects, with emphasis on Language Arts and Math. When a dyslexic student is 2+ years behind in multiple subjects at school, you may want to consider enrolling them at Loomis Gateway Academy. We describe our Full Curriculum School as an intensive program intended to close the gap between a student’s current grade and their grade level performance in reading and math. In order to close the gap, we typically need 2-3 school years, depending on how large the gap is. It is our goal to prepare each student for re-entering a traditional school setting, be it private or public, to ensure continued success in their learning. All LGA faculty are either certified dyslexia Reading Specialists, Public School Credentialed in regular and/or Special Education, or highly qualified to work with the dyslexic learner.

Loomis Gateway Academy offers three different Structured Literacy Programs to give your child the help they need to succeed in school.

1. After School Tutoring for the mild to moderately dyslexic student.

2. Alternative Education Program for the moderate to severe, or profoundly dyslexic student.

3. Summer 5-week Program of Reading and Math + Fun for all dyslexic students grades 2-9.

Alternative Education Program
If your child is moderate to severely dyslexic, or is profoundly dyslexic, twice a week tutoring is not enough. LGA offers an intensive Alternative Education Program to provide specialized Reading, Writing, Spelling and Math instruction four times a week which we believe is necessary for the more severely dyslexic student. Frequency of instruction, and repetition of instruction is key to helping the severely dyslexic student.  And when dyslexia is severe it can impact a child’s learning of all subjects.  The Alternative Education Program can include Science, Social Studies, and Art, each taking your child’s dyslexia into consideration.  This Program requires that the parent be the primary guardian of their child’s education.  LGA provides necessary programs; the parent may need to supplement their child’s education with additional Science, Social Studies and PE.
After School Tutoring for grades 1-12
We offer Reading and Math Remediation tutoring during after school hours Monday-Thursday using the Barton Reading & Spelling system complimented with other Structured Literacy Approaches for Reading, and Making Math Real for Math.

We provide a brief initial assessment of your child which enables us to determine if (s)he needs our tutoring and, if so, how frequent the tutoring should be for optimum results.
Summer Program​​

Summer is an ideal time for your child to catch up on reading and math when they don’t have other classes and homework to worry about.  Our Summer Program includes reading and math every day along with Developmental Movement Games, and Art.  This is a great opportunity for kids to meet and interact with other children who struggle with the same issues that they do and, to work together in a positive and collaborative learning environment.  This program has limited space and fills up quickly.
Screenings and Assessments

Until the problem is properly identified, there’s no chance of remediating it.

Full Dyslexia Screening includes standardized testing administered by qualified testers, who also understand all aspects of dyslexia.  The following tests are utilized: Weschsler Individual Achievement Test, Third Edition WIAT-III, Process Assessment of the Learner-Second Edition: Diagnostics for Reading, Writing and Math, PAL-II, Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, Second Edition, CTOPP-II, and Word Identification and Spelling Test, WIST, designed by Barbara Wilson, creator of The Wilson Reading System.  Informal testing is also part of the screening process to determine the mastery, or lack thereof, of Auditory Discrimination and Phonemic Awareness.​

The Screening is a 3-step process:

1) A parent interview to gather early childhood and family history (30 min),

2) The testing (2+hours), and

3) a follow-up meeting with the parent to go over a comprehensive written report (1 hr).

The report includes suggestions for remediation, and accommodations.
