Mark Heitner, MD
Introducing Mark Heitner, MD
Innovator: He was a co-founder of one of the first geriatric medical clinics in the US, in 1983. He became the medical director of Charter Hospital of Albuquerque, NM after completing psychiatry residency training at New York Hospital.
He subsequently created one of the first outpatient drug and alcohol treatment programs in 1990. This became the standard method of treating alcoholism, and made inexpensive care available throughout the US.
Software: He founded a website design company in 1994. He implemented Oceania’s electronic medical record in California and Hawaii for Kaiser Permanente. He was then the GM of Internet Products at Oceania, Inc., before Cerner acquired it.
He pioneered the use of online doctor – patient consultations in the US. This VC funded startup, backed by the American Medical Association and most US medical specialty societies, offered patients comprehensive healthcare information published by these medical societies. The healthcare information was distributed on physician websites, which also offered physician – patient email consults.
What I do
I treat teens and adults with anxiety, depression, bipolar, substance abuse and attention
deficit disorders. Most patients take a medication as a part of their treatment.
Most patients are software engineers, students, teachers, entrepreneurs, investors, scientists,
healthcare providers, artists, writers, and people working at Bay Area tech companies.
Experience
My medical training and psychiatry training was at Cornell University-New York Hospital.
I have been a psychiatric hospital medical director and have also managed hospital
programs for teens and adults. I’ve treated about 12,000 patients.
