NorCal Services for Deaf & Hard of Hearing is a non-profit community-based organization serving Deaf & Hard of Hearing individuals in 24 northeastern counties of California. Founded and managed by a team of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, NorCal Services for Deaf & Hard of Hearing has been an organization ‘of, by and for’ the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community since 1977.

ADVOCACY SERVICES

One-on-one assistance and system advocacy to ensure equal access and opportunity to education, employment and public services. Information and consultation for businesses, employers and public agencies about the Americans with Disabilities Act and other applicable non-discrimination laws. Information about your legal rights and strategies for self-advocacy for communication access issues, disability discrimination, free and appropriate public education, and other areas. Assistance and representation at administrative proceedings including Individualized Education Program or Social Security.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

Want to improve your writing skills? Need to improve your communication skills with your boss? Want to pass your DMV Test? Need help becoming job ready? Want to learn to budget your money better? Do you need help getting into college? NorCal’s specialized employment services can help you!

SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS

Camp Grizzly is our one-week residential camp program for deaf and hard of hearing youth age 7 to 17.

EXCEL is our day program for Alta Regional Center consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing, based in Sacramento.

DeafSAFE is a program providing support for deaf and hard of hearing survivors of sexual violence.

DEAF COACH

NorCal contracts with school districts to provide Deaf Coaching services to families with deaf and hard of hearing children.

A Deaf Coach is a Deaf adult who is fluent in sign language and works in conjunction with the teacher and the family to provide services that support the student’s progress toward IFSP or IEP language goals.

Services provided by the Deaf Coach:

·   Meet with the family weekly or bi-weekly

·  Teach sign vocabulary and engage the family in sign language communication

·   Model the use of sign language and visual cues when interacting with their child

·   Provide strategies for communication

·   Share about Deaf Culture and the general experiences that Deaf people have

·   Introduce families to events in the Deaf Community
