SJB Child Development Centers
SJB Child Development Centers is committed to providing high quality learning environments to support the success and well-being of children and families in our diverse communities.
We believe all children, regardless of economic status, deserve investment by dedicated skilled professionals in warm environments, which educate, engage, and inspire. Since 1971, it has been SJB’s privilege to prepare children and families for brighter and more prosperous futures with innovative services transcending traditional childcare. By providing children with the care and education they deserve and parents with access to the resources they need, we work together to create a vibrant, thriving community.
HISTORY
Our mission stems from the vision of our organization’s founder, Mr. Bill Williams. Mr. Bill Williams wanted to help families establish financial independence by creating a safe place for children of working parents. He also sought to break the cycle of poverty by offering education-based child care; therefore, providing access to the same opportunities as those from more affluent families.
SJB Child Development Center was established with these goals in mind and quickly made a name for itself by being the first in Santa Clara County to offer toddler care, as well as before and after school care.
Working to uphold Mr. Bill Williams’ vision of empowering children and families of Santa Clara County, SJB has 15 sites and multiple programs that truly support children and families from all income levels
INFANT & TODDLER
SJB Child Development Centers provides infant/toddler care in many of our centers. We follow the PITC (Program for Infant Toddler Care) group approach and adhere to its philosophy. As a requirement of the program, teachers establish deep relationships with each infant they serve, so they learn each individual’s needs and feelings. The two main components of our infant/toddler care program are:
Safe Environments
SJB views the setting for infant/toddler care as critical. Our teachers design environments to ensure safety, appropriate developmental challenges, and optimum health for children.
Strengthening Emotional Connections
Equally important as safe environments, our program strengthens a child’s family and cultural identity through meaningful connections between the classroom and the child’s family culture.
PRESCHOOL
CREATIVE CURRICULUM FOR PRESCHOOL INCLUDES 5 COMPONENTS:
SJB believes each child to be a unique and active learner who develops, learns, and progresses through play at their own pace. SJB selects materials and guides children’s learning based on the social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and language developmental domains. The Learning Environment
Classrooms provide the context for building meaningful relationships, teaching and learning. SJB’s environments create a community of curious learners through interest areas that provide choices, opportunities, and challenges. In our preschool classrooms children learn to interact, create, and thrive in the context of relationships with their peers and teachers. What Children Learn
SJB classroom staff identify the skills and concepts children need to acquire in each content area. The content of the curriculum is taught with children’s developmental stages in mind. We find children are more likely to be successful learners when they feel excited and challenged by what they are learning. The Teachers Role
SJB teachers are engaged in an ongoing cycle of assessment. They observe, document, reflect, plan and implement appropriate strategies to meet each child at their point of development. Assessments are measured by the use of the DRDP’s (Desired Results Developmental Profile) and aligned with the California Department of Education-Early Education Department Standards. Teachers observe and listen to the children to learn about their individual interests, skill-sets and personalities/behaviors. By observing children, teachers begin to build individual relationships with each child. Teachers also use a broad range of research based-and curriculum driven teaching strategies to interact with individual children or with the entire class.
Assessing Children’s Learning
Teachers track each child’s progress using a systematic approach that supports learning and is consistent with the goals and objectives of the curriculum and the DRDP assessment.
The Family’s Role
SJB supports the family by understanding that the family is the child’s first and most important teacher. Family collaboration and support is an integral part of the SJB preschool experience. Our preschool program provides family-centric tools, resources, and opportunities for involvement. SJB focuses on developing a relationship with each family so we can work together to support each child’s healthy development and learning.
