Sterne School

Sterne School is a co-ed, independent day school serving grades 4-12 in San Francisco.

Welcome to Sterne School in San Francisco. We are a small, nurturing environment for middle and high school students with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Our aim is to remove the pressure and fast pace our students often find in traditional schools so that students can transition from learning disabilities to learning discovery.

We provide stability, confidence and new skills to help our students realize their individual academic potential and contribute positively to society. In our warm, respectful, and diverse community, many Sterne students experience educational success for the first time. They benefit from the extra attention of teachers and the support of each other. They acquire new tools that allow them to find their own voices.

Sterne is based on a “strengths” model where we focus on what our students can do and the many talents yet to be realized. An individualized learning plan illuminates each student’s strengths and provides high-support for areas where each student may struggle. Sterne’s dedicated teachers are trained to specifically address a range of learning issues, from reading to math to difficulties with executive functioning. Beyond expertise, it is their love of learning and teaching that fosters a positive, caring classroom environment provoking intellectual curiosity and discovery.

The Sterne Summer School offers the opportunity to enroll in morning academics, afternoon electives, or both. Thanks to Sterne’s singular brand of small class sizes and customized teaching methods, Sterne’s Summer School allows students of all skill levels to approach tough subjects in an experiential (and fun!) way. Students develop new tools and study strategies that they can use throughout the academic year. The Sterne Summer School is open to students entering grades 4 – 12. Students do not need to be enrolled at Sterne School for enrollment at the Sterne Summer School.
