Sunnyvale’s Therapeutic Recreation provides social recreation programs for individuals with disabilities. We welcome individuals with various disabilities including, but not limited to, developmental, intellectual, autism, cerebral palsy, visual/hearing impairment and physical disabilities. Programs are supervised and managed by a certified recreation therapist. Program staff are trained to provide the highest quality of service to participants while meeting individual needs. All participants must be independently capable of personal care or provide their own attendant. Our programs are designed to: • Provide recreation opportunities in a safe, caring and positive environment • Create self-confidence through exposure to new recreation opportunities • Foster independence • Enhance gross and fine motor coordination skills, social interaction and self-expression

Previous classes include:

Kids Klub – 5:1 Ratio (Ages 7 – 12)  Play group games, create arts and crafts and enjoy activities in a fun and safe environment with this afterschool program. Program focuses on appropriate social interaction, following directions, cooperation and decision making. Participants need to bring a snack each week. Participants must be independent with personal care and be able to attend program with a 5:1 participant to staff ratio or bring an attendant.

Teen Hangout – 8:1 Ratio (Ages 13 – 19) Hangout with your friends for an afternoon of games, active activities, arts and crafts, music and socializing. Participants strengthen skills in social interaction, decision making, independence and self-expression. Participants must be able to attend a large social gathering with minimal supervision or bring an attendant. A 8:1 staff to participant ratio is provided

Community Explorations – 12:1 Ratio (Ages 18+) Explore the community while improving life skills. Program focuses on strengthening life skills in money management and social etiquette. Four weeks of the session are held at the Senior Center to identify and develop life skills needed on community outings. Other activities done in center are working out at the fitness room and playing billiards. The other four weeks feature different community outings that may include hiking, museums, shopping, movies and more. Admission fees are included. Transportation is not provided. Participants must be able to attend a large group gathering with minimal supervision or bring an attendant. A 12:1 staff to participant ratio is provided.

Saturday of Experience – 10:1 Ratio (Ages 18+) Start off the weekend with a morning of fun filled activities. Activities include arts and crafts, cooking, games, sports and outings. Emphasis is on strengthening appropriate social interaction and leisure awareness. Participants must be able to attend a large social gathering with minimal supervision or bring an attendant. A 10:1 staff to participant ratio is provided.

The City of Sunnyvale is offering a new program, Inclusive Kids Klub for ages 7-12.  This afterschool program is designed for children with and without disabilities.  The structure will be the same as the previous Kids Klub program.  The first fall session will be held at the Recreation Center and the second fall session will be held at Fair Oaks Park Building.  During the second session, the participants will play on the Magical Bridge Playground of part of the program time.

Super Safari Preschool

We offer a half-day, play-based program for preschool children ages 3 to 5 years. It’s designed to provide children their first experience in a structured environment. The program runs September through early June. It follows the Sunnyvale School District holiday schedule. To be eligible, your child must be 3-years-old by Sept. 1 at the start of each school year.

Children MUST be toilet-trained by the first day of class. They must be able to use a standard-size toilet without help.
