The Burkard School
The Right Support Makes All The Difference
A new independent K-5 school for bright children who need extra support with behavior management, executive functioning, and/or social-emotional learning in the classroom.
Many children can benefit from the supportive structure of The Burkard School. A child with ADHD, anxiety, high-functioning Asperger’s or autism, social cognitive disorder, or with other challenges that make it difficult for him or her to conform to a traditional classroom setting can flourish in our environment. A diagnosis is not necessary for admission. Any child who can benefit from extra social-emotional, behavioral, or executive functioning support will find our model invaluable.
Social-Emotional Learning
Self-Awareness, Resilience, Responsibility, Community
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is the core of The Burkard School’s mission. We believe that the key to a happy, fulfilled life lies in a person’s ability to be self-aware, resilient, responsible, and ultimately an engaged citizen with deep connections to others. SEL is fundamental not only to children’s social and emotional development but also to their health, ethical development, motivation to achieve, and academic learning as well.
Behavioral Support
Specialists who can help your child succeed
Some children exhibit disruptive behavior due to underlying anxiety, frustration, ADHD, or other factors. Most classrooms are not set up to help these students effectively. At The Burkard School, our educator/behavioral specialist model allows those students who need extra behavioral support to receive it in a consistent, patient, and loving way.
The Burkard School Core Curriculum
Curiosity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and Problem Solving
At The Burkard School, our educator/specialist model allows the teachers to focus their attention on teaching and the students on learning. Inquisitive minds that might have been distracted in their previous school settings are now focused, regulated, and ready to learn. Our curriculum engages the students in active, inquiry-based, experiential learning that awakens a love and excitement for school.
The Burkard School’s key academic tenets – Curiosity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and Problem Solving – drive all aspects of learning across all subject areas. We build upon the Common Core State Standards with a content-rich curriculum consistent with the best practices and research in the field of elementary education. In Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, and PE, our students engage in hands-on activities, learn to think creatively, and solve problems methodically.
With a student-teacher ratio of 5:1 and an intimate classroom setting, teachers can be responsive to individual differences in ability and interests. Our teachers have facility with numerous modes of teaching, incorporating sensorial, visual-spatial, kinesthetic and auditory approaches to ignite the spark of learning in multiple ways.
At The Burkard School, we provide the framework to unlock the scholar in your child.
Additionally, we offer a social group twice a week after school that focuses on Social Emotional Learning. In group, the students focus on flexibility, emotional awareness, and collaborating with peers through games and activities.
