We educate and empower survivors of spinal cord injury and disease to achieve and maintain the highest levels of independence, health and personal fulfillment. We fulfill this mission by providing an innovative Peer Support Network and by raising awareness about spinal cord injury and disease through education. Our education programs are developed to address information and issues important to our constituency, policy makers, the general public, and the media, and including injury prevention, improvements in medical, rehabilitative and supportive services, research and public policy formulation.

Activities:

  • Our Resource Center answers thousands of calls and e-mails and provides information and referral to individuals with new and existing SCI/D, their families and their service providers.
  • Our National Peer Support Network is providing peer support referrals to programs across the country, linking people with SCI/D to each other. We were recently funded by the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation to begin expanding this important program.
  • Our website gets approximately 500,000 “hits” each year! That’s 1,500 visitors per day!
  • NSCIA has 21 Chapters and 19 Support groups actively serving their communities.
  • We publish and distribute SCI Life™ magazine. SCI Life’s™ editor, Lex Frieden, was recently sworn in by President Bush as chair of the National Council on Disability.
  • We are working with our partners to prevent Violently Acquired Spinal Cord Injury.
  • We are supporting several legislative initiatives regarding issues affecting people with SCI/D.

NSCIA is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) organization serving people with spinal cord injuries and diseases, their families and the entire SCI community since 1948.

Northern California Chapter of United Spinal Association

NorCal SCI provides information and resources allowing people affected by or living with a Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder in Northern California to thrive and live productively.

Programs:

Road To Recovery
The purpose of the Road to Recovery (R2R) program is to provide qualifying recipients with block grants for continued therapy and/or equipment or resources as well as dedicated mentoring supporting individuals with SCI/D. The grant and mentoring services are designed to enable an individual continue to pursue their recovery when insurance or financial resources are not available.

Care Package Resources
Our goal is to ensure every person with a new case of spinal cord injury/disorder admitted at a medical facility or rehab center in Northern California receives a Care Package customized as much as possible based on the needs and level of injury of the individual.

NorCal SCI Family Support Network
We are acutely aware that a Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder does not just affect the individual but also those closest to that person. Family and friends can be easily overwhelmed with the responsibility to do their best to support their loved one. We have family members who have been there before with their son, daughter or spouse and will be more than happy to share their own experiences on how they successfully navigated their way through the challenges.
