The Learning Disability (LD) Support and Information Workshop is here for you!

We meet at Parents Helping Parents on the second Tuesday evening of each month, from September through May.

This group combines ADHD and LD (Learning Disabilities) information into a robust Lecture Series and Parent Support Group. It has been a vital part of Parents Helping Parents for over 25 years. Organized and is lead by a small team of volunteers (parents and educational therapists).  It serves the LD/ADHD community of families, educators, and other professionals with presentations by local specialists on a wide range of LD and ADHD topics. Also offered are professional, student and parent panels, occasional hands-on workshops, and a monthly facilitated parent support group.

Why: Offering education, understanding, resources, perspectives, strategies, tips, advocacy and connection

What: Parent Support Group (PSG) meets at 5:45, before the monthly lecture, and is for parents with children/teens with Learning Disabilities, ADHD or related issues. Its purpose is to enable parents to share their concerns with other parents and to learn from one another. Two experienced facilitators ensure that the discussion feels safe and that each attendee has the chance to present his/her key concern of the evening. There is no charge for this session. No pre-registration required.

Lecture Series generally meets from 7:00-8:45 p.m., immediately following the Parent Support Group. Occasionally there will be a special Saturday event. Local experts are brought in on an array of topics – dyslexia, auditory processing, attention deficit disorder, executive function, math, written expression, assessments/testing, social skills, anxiety/depression, learning strategies, transitions, who’s who in the schools, the learning disability simulation, etc. An annual highlight is the student panel in March in which several high school juniors and seniors plus a few college students come to share their insights. This is the one event in which children 10 and older may attend with a parent. Pre-registration is required for the LD simulation as well as any special Saturday events. See sidebar for information about and flyers for this year’s offerings.

Cost: As noted above, there is no charge for the Parent Support Group.  The lecture series is free for PHP members and non-members are asked for $15/family per event. PHP memberships can be purchased or renewed at our events, with our group receiving some of the funds to help sustain our program. There may be a special charge for Saturday events.
