About CCHAT

Since opening its doors in 1996, CCHAT (Children’s Choice for Hearing and Talking) has occupied a unique position in the greater Sacramento area. As California’s only listening and spoken language program north of San Francisco, we service a very wide area that includes more than 30 school districts. And over the years, we’ve helped hundreds of children who are deaf and hard of hearing matriculate into mainstream school programs.

Toddler, Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten Programs

Students in this program receive a world-class preschool education – accompanied by daily speech, language, and listening therapy. We also use a range of innovative methods to enhance your child’s communication skills. For example, our music program employs rhythmic phonetics to engage your child and draw out his or her natural creativity.

Consultation and diagnostic services also come standard with our preschool program.

Kindergarten & Primary Grade Programs

Once enrolled in our kindergarten and primary school programs, your child benefits from:

  1. Low student-teacher ratios. Class sizes range from 1 to 12 students, depending on the activity. This ensures your child receives individualized attention as he or she masters essential speech, language, listening and comprehension skills.
  2. Standardized curriculum. State-approved reading, math, science and social studies curricula are used throughout. In-class instruction adheres closely to CCHAT’s pedagogical outline and the California Content Standards. In addition, your child’s progress is regularly monitored using report cards, assessments, and parent-teacher conferences.

All classes use high-quality instructional materials and up-to-date textbooks. And your child also participates in physical education that meets the latest state-approved standards.

In addition to our core curricula, we also offer a 20-day extended school year program during the summer. The same IEP/IFSP standards apply during these annual camp sessions. But this experience provides your child with a unique opportunity to collaborate with their hearing peers in a fun, less-structured environment.

  • Older campers enjoy opportunities to work with a diverse team of instructors and counselors throughout the day. This allows them to apply what they’ve learned during the school year to new situations, environments, and people.
  • Younger campers remain with a primary teacher throughout each day.
