The Speech Pathology Group (SPG) is a team of highly regarded speech-language pathologists serving adults and children in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1989.

Philosophy and Treatment Model (Mission Statement): Our clinic-based services include comprehensive assessments, consultations, individualized therapy, and small group instruction. We are a unique practice in that we limit therapist caseloads, and thus devote more time to planning and implementing treatment programs, collaborating frequently with other professionals, involving parents/caregivers, and continually expanding clinical areas of expertise.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

SELECTIVE MUTISM Consultation, assessment and direct treatment in clinic, school and community settings as needed. SPG licensed speech therapists utilize a combination of “best practice” behavioral therapy techniques to target increasing social comfort and communication across partners and settings.

In addition to weekly individual therapy services, we provide the following:

COCHLEAR IMPLANT REHABILITATION

SPG has two staff members with special training in treating children with cochlear implants and hearing aids. This service is currently available at our Walnut Creek Clinic site.

EARLY INTERVENTION SERVICES

SPG endorses early detection of speech-language and hearing disorders by offering low-cost screenings to community preschool sites. We also provide parent/caregiver and professional in-service trainings upon request.

BUILDING BRIDGES (SCHEDULED PER PARENT REQUEST)

A workshop designed to help caregivers and families of infants, toddlers and children bridge communication gaps that may exist due to delayed language acquisition. The workshop will focus on techniques families can use in the home and during naturally-occurring activities to facilitate language growth and improved social language interaction. An experienced speech-language pathologist in the area of early language development will model appropriate linguistic structures, foster vocabulary development growth, and expand language in natural environments. Participants will receive materials and activities they can take home and immediately use in the home to make learning fun for the entire family. Upon request, staff trainings are available.
Phase 1: Infant/toddler population
Phase 2: Preschool/Pre K population

COMMUNICATION POWER HOUR (OFFERED ONCE PER MONTH)

A monthly parent and toddler group session where parents meet have an opportunity to learn about typical language development; ask questions about their own child’s speech and language difficulties; learn strategies and techniques to stimulate language development; discover ways to use toys at home in order to enhance play skills and promote early concept development; help improve social skills; and learn about community resources which may be suitable based on the family and child’s level of need.

PEDIATRIC FEEDING THERAPY

SPG offers assessment and treatment of pediatric feeding disorders for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children. Staff is trained in the assessment and treatment of feeding disorders and will work with your other medical providers to provide comprehensive, coordinated services to meet your child’s feeding needs. Learn more »

SOCIAL LANGUAGE SUMMER CAMP

Camp Super Communicators is a social language camp for SPG Children ages 6-10 at Valle Verde Children’s Center in Walnut Creek, CA. It is a fun, one-of-a-kind summer camp led by a Speech-Language Pathologist to learn and practice social skills with peers in a mainstream summer camp setting. Children enrolled through SPG will benefit from specialized instruction from a licensed speech language pathologist and support staff based on their communication needs. There will be opportunities for small group learning and time to practice new skills in a natural camp setting.

COMMUNICATE WITH CARE PARENT SUPPORT GROUP

SPG offers a friendly and helpful support group for parents and caregivers. This support group welcomes anyone in the community that has a child with special needs. You do not need to be an SPG family to attend. The support group meets every other month during the school year from 6:30-8pm in Walnut Creek. It is an adult only group and daycare is not provided. This group allows caregivers to connect with one another in a positive and supportive environment at no cost. There are opportunities to listen to professional speakers and gain resources in the community.
Upcoming dates and sign ups are posted here.
